Rogersville’s
first settlers came because of the hard work of Mgr. Marcel
François Richard who was a priest in the surrounding parishes.
In
1902, the Trappistes monks, at this time in danger in France,
came in Collette and established a monastery on a land given
by Mgr. Richard. They were of great help to the people living
in the area. He also brought the Trappistines, which settled
in the Village of Rogersville
Mgr.
Richard continued his mission to colonize Rogersville right
through his death in 1915. The Village of Rogersville has
deep roots with Mgr. Richard, the father of the Acadian
renaissance.
The
Village of Rogersville was founded in 1869 because of workers
who came to build the intercolonial railway between Halifax
and Montreal. They built a station in the village which
was known as Carleton Station.
In
1885, Mgr. Richard named the community known as Carleton
Station, Rogersville. He gave this name because of Mgr.
Rogers who was the bishop of the Chatham Diocese at the
time. This was also the time where Rogersville developed
itself in becoming a thriving village. |
